On Tuesday, August 4 a massive explosion blasted through Beirut’s city center fueled by nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate. More than 100 people have been killed, with hundreds missing and thousands more injured. It is estimated that 300,000 people will be displaced due to damaged homes. Lebanon has already been heavily impacted by COVID-19 and an economic crisis that has forced tens of thousands into poverty; this latest explosion only exacerbates those prior struggles. Through a single donation to the Fund, you can support multiple organizations' initiatives to provide a short-term and long-term response and recovery. We have initially selected organizations that are on the ground assisting with immediate relief needs, including rescue efforts and medical assistance. The composition of nonprofits in this Fund is subject to change as we learn more about the needs on the ground.

We are all in shock witnessing the massive explosion that happened in Beirut on the 4th of August. This comes at a time when the Lebanese nation is already suffering from a catastrophic economic situation, an unprecedented pandemic and relentless government corruption. The impact was intense, rippling through several areas of the capital and could be heard 149 miles away on the island of Cyprus. According to the Lebanese Red Cross, the reported loss of life is more than 100 people and 4,000 injured. Currently, search and rescue teams are still digging through rubble looking for missing persons. There is significant damage to structures and authorities continue to assess damage. The exact cause of the explosion remains unconfirmed, though Lebanon authorities have stated that highly explosive material that has been stored at the port for years had blown up following a fire. Lebanese Red Cross teams are on the ground responding to humanitarian needs. All 125 Lebanese Red Cross ambulances are responding to the site of the explosion, rescuing and transporting the critically wounded to hospitals. On site, the Lebanese Red Cross is performing search and rescue in addition to treating people suffering from injuries. Triage and first aid stations have been set up across the Beirut port to treat injuries. Many Lebanese people have lost their homes and essentials. In response, the Lebanese Red Cross is providing emergency shelter for 1,000 families and anticipates providing shelter for as many as 10,000 families in the coming months. Food, water, hygiene kits, masks, gloves and other essentials are being distributed to vulnerable families in need. To meet emotional support needs, trained team members are providing crisis counseling to the community. For family members that have been separated by this event, the Red Cross Restoring Family Links program is reconnecting families. The primary focus is saving lives right now. As hospitals continue to be overwhelmed, the Lebanese Red Cross has 36 health centers and nine mobile medical units operating in all regions of the country. These medical services are provided to all people in need, free of charge. The money will be spent to the Lebanese Red Cross. Record breaking heavy rain hit the prefectures of Kumamoto and Kagoshima in the southern Japanese island of Kyushu on 4 July 2020 and caused flooding and landslides. As of 9 July 2020, over 60 people are confirmed dead and approximately a dozen are reported missing. A number of communities were cut off due to severed roads, among other damage. Approximately 4,700 buildings have been destroyed, damaged or flooded.

Employee powered Cyclone Amphan Relief 2020 Amphan cyclone has made landfall on May 20th completely decimating enormous areas across coastal West Bengal and Orissa. Millions of people who have already been affected badly by #COVID19 pandemic and lockdown, have now lost their homes too. Our partners on the ground are working with the local administration to help people shelter in schools and flood centers. Cyclone Amphan’s landfall coincided with high tide resulting in breaching of embankments and widespread flooding. The local people, many of whom are subsistence farmers and fisherfolk, are also facing tremendous damage to what’s left of agriculture and their livelihoods. We are currently working on mitigating the immediate food and water shortage in the area. AID started working intensively with farmers in the region in 2009 after Cyclone Aila devastated Sunderbans exactly 11 years ago. What started as a small group of 20 farmers choosing to rebuild organic and sustainable farming by reviving farmlands from salinity, has grown to a movement of 25000 farmers in the past decade, with outlets established to directly sell produce to consumers in Kolkata. But, history repeats with itself with the severe cyclone Amphan breaching embankments and inundating farmlands with saline water from the sea. We expect similar to more deeper engagement in many fronts as post-Aila with these resilient communities to help rebuild literally from the ground up. Rural and coastal communities in West Bengal and Odisha have already been hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis and ensuing Government lockdown. Now, in the last 24+ hours, another existential threat has emerged in the region in the form of Cyclone Amphan - one of the strongest cyclones to hit the subcontinent in recent times. NEARLY 30 MILLION people are expected to be affected by this cyclone. The impact of Amphan has been amplified due to the COVID-19 lockdown, with many families unable to evacuate in advance and crucial relief efforts delayed. We are receiving regular updates from ground-zero by Asha projects such as Mukti, based in Purbasridharpur (https://ashanet.org/project/?pid=788). The latest communications from Mukti report wind speeds of 100-160kmph battering houses filled with families, and widespread flooding destroying schools & crops, and causing road blockages. Additionally, Mukti reports that flood relief centers are presently packed, and the threat of a COVID-19 epidemic breaking out in these centers is extremely high at the moment. Asha for Education supports 36 projects, predominantly in rural areas, across West Bengal and Odisha.
