September is World Alzheimer's Month, a global campaign dedicated to raising public awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. The following nonprofits are doing the critical work to educate communities, support those living with Alzheimer's as well as their caregivers and families, and advocate for improved care and innovative treatment research.

Honoring Our Dad In 2015, our father Jerry lost his battle with cancer. Many of his hobbies involved being outdoors, something that he has passed on to each of us. He especially enjoyed long walks in the country. This year, we’re participating in a Run/Walk fundraiser for the American Cancer Society on a country race course. It’s the same event some of us walked in 2014, while he was recovering in the hospital from surgery. Cancer has touched nearly every family. An estimated 40% of Americans will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. That staggering statistic is a powerful reminder of how much work is still needed to fight this disease and support those affected by it. We're raising funds to support research, treatment, and care through the American Cancer Society, an organization doing critical work in the fight against cancer. Every donation helps move us closer to a world with more survivors. If you're able, we would be deeply grateful for your support. We will match 50% of the first $1k of donations.

I will be running the 2025 Berlin Marathon for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute! This will be my second marathon I am running in memory of my Uncle Jerry, who lost his battle to brain cancer in 2020 after undergoing clinical trials at Dana Farber. It's impossible to live up to the legacy of such a wonderful man, but I'm honored to carry his memory with me through this journey. Dana Farber was there for my family to give my uncle the most advanced treatment possible, and my goal is to continue helping the cutting-edge research these doctors are pushing forward.

On November 2nd this year, I am running in the New York City Marathon. Not only is this my first ever marathon, but to run in my home of NYC is a dream come true. I am running in memory of my beloved uncle, Dr. Phu Huu Le who passed away 15 years ago. He was an extraordinary powerhouse, who led his family to new beginnings after the Vietnam War. He was a kind father and passionate leader in his community. Despite his challenges, he always led with joy and warmth in every action. His trips with me and my siblings to Chuck E Cheese still stand as a favorite childhood memory. To honor my uncle’s legacy of service and compassion, I am running to raise funds for the Samaritans, which operates NYC’s only anonymous and confidential suicide prevention hotline. The Samaritans work tirelessly to provide vital education and resources for those in crisis. Organizations like the Samaritans help break stigmas in mental health and enable others to find hope. I am respectfully asking for any support you can provide. Whether it’s a donation, or simply checking in on someone you know who could be struggling. Every mile I run will be for Phu and for those who need to know that they’re not alone. Every contribution for the Samaritans, no matter the size, is deeply appreciated. Every year, 600 children in the Netherlands are diagnosed with cancer. Sadly, one in four of these children does not survive.

Dialysis is degenerative. People go on dialysis and decay, psychologically and physically, until they are socially isolated. Then, they die in silence. There is no awareness, and so no desire to change this. Despite heavy cost to both the patient and the state (~5% of all health care spending) This is the reason dialysis has remained the same for 50 years. As someone who was on dialysis and now working to end it, Tuğrul Irmak and the team at Nephrology want to make a difference. They want to build a bio-artificial kidney. For this we need to raise not only funds but awareness, for it is the lack of awareness that has blocked progress. About Tuğrul Irmak He is extremely motivated to end the threat of dialysis that hangs like a dark cloud over every kidney patient. As a mountain climber and kidney patient himself, Tuğrul Irmak takes action for a future free of kidney dialysis. His target is €1 million. But he goes much further than just a fundraiser: as a researcher at the UMC Utrecht, Tuğrul himself is also working on an artificial implantable kidney. He just started a campaign: the Climb Against Time . Tuğrul: “The transplant gave me my life back — or at least let it continue. But my kidney has a limited lifespan. I spoke to people in the same situation whose transplant failed and who had to go back to dialysis. With this campaign, we want to raise money for Artificial Kidney Research. Dialysis patients have to make a constant, tough climb to survive. To symbolize this, we are going to climb!” Tuğrul invites people to donate, but also to participate in the Climb and take on their own challenge. “Walk, cycle, run or climb. Use your summer vacation for a good cause.” Via Friends of UMC Utrecht & Wilhelmina Children's Hospital, the donations will end up in the right place.

May is Stroke Awareness Month. My daughter suffered a stroke when she was 13 years old. We didn't immediately think it was a Stroke due to her young age and she was originally misdiagnosed with Bell's Palsy. Within 24 hours, after seeing a neurologist, it was soon discovered her symptoms were due to a Stroke. She is now 18, in College and thriving, however precious time was wasted from the onset of symptoms to treatment which could have led to a much worse outcome. Strokes can happen at any age and it is important to know the risk factors and recognize the signs! This is why during the Month of May I am raising money for the American Stroke Association (A division of the American Heart Association) in order to help this organization Spread Awareness and Save Lives!!

This Spring, we're proud to host the annual Campbell's 5K Run/Walk supporting Project H.O.P.E, dedicated to mental health awareness services in Camden. In honor of what would have been my Dad's 67 birthday, I'm raising money for Brain Cancer Research. My dad, Peter Hughes VandenBerg, was diagnosed with brain cancer April 12, 2007 and met this challenge, as he did his entire life, with Faith and Courage, and the support of his family and friends "Team Vandy". As I've become a father myself, I have a new respect for his dedication to family and how hard it must have been to be present with us while battling cancer. My father passed away at 3:33am and my son was born at 3:33am. Life comes full circle. I'm raising money so we get one step closer to finding a cure for brain cancer.

Help support my team, the Swittx Sunflowers for this year's Relay for Life of Gwinnett, presented by Primerica and Northside Hospital Cancer Institute. When my wife, Sara was diagnosed with alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma in 2022, our world was turned upside down. It was a rare, aggressive cancer mostly found in children, but it was even more rare and even more aggressive in young adults. Research and treatments were limited. When she passed away 9 months later, I pledged to direct my energy to helping fund research for cancers like hers. "Switt" is a mashup of her first and last name, Sara Wittenzellner. "Swittx" was the online name she used for her social media and livestreams. The sunflower was her favorite flower, what she called the members of her online community, and, ironically, a symbol of sarcoma awareness and hope. So in August 2023, I started the Swittx Sunflowers Relay for Life team. Swittx Sunflowers is a #GoldTogether team, which means 100% of the funds we raise is directed to funding research for childhood and young adult cancers, such as rhabdomyosarcoma, which took my wife, 29 years of age, after only 9 months of marriage.

In 31 years of our charitable endeavours, we raised nearly PLN 2.3 billion We purchased and donated 72,000 pieces of medical equipment Our objective is to support public healthcare in Poland. We achieve this goal by purchasing state-of-the-art equipment for Polish hospitals and clinics. We have also initiated and helped to run eight nationwide medical programmes, which aim to transform medicine in the country systematically. The purpose of our educational programme is to introduce CPR lessons to primary schools nationwide. We work to raise awareness and improve health prevention in the entire country.
